PETALO GRANDE Large Laser-cut Leather Handbag by Caterina Lucchi (Product Review)

PETALO GRANDE laser-cut handbag
PETALO GRANDE laser-cut handbag. By the way, I am 5'5" and the bag in no way feels too large for me.

When we write product descriptions, we try to go beyond simply listing features and convey the essence, or the “personality” of the product. Often I’ll let a product sit on my desk for days before I feel like I am familiar enough with it to write about it. If it’s a handbag, I might try carrying it on my shoulder to see how comfortable it feels, or try filling it with different items to see what kinds of uses it might be best suited for.

With the Petalo Grande Laser-cut Leather Handbag, I wanted to try something different. So I had Daniele take photos of me as I was toting it around. The result was somewhat surprising … the image I had of the bag was not the same as what I saw in the photos! Because the bag is so light – one of the big pluses of Caterina Lucchi‘s leather bags – I hadn’t realized how large the bag seems from a distance. (I also realized that my sepia-colored sweater does not really bring out the nuanced java color of this bag). The bag IS quite large. You can fit quite a bit of stuff in it. But you won’t feel like you’re toting around a bowling bag, because even though it’s real Italian leather, it’s calfskin … super soft and supple, and light-weight.

I love the Batik, two-toned look of this bag. It’s subtle enough as to not detract from the gorgeous laser-cut flower motif, but offers just enough of a contrast to remind us that the understated brown is most definitely intentional. A very nice feature (also typical of Caterina Lucchi’s handbags) is the removable leather strap. I thought this bag would be first and foremost a handbag, and secondly a shoulder/cross-body bag, but to my surprise, it looked fantastic worn crossbody style – perhaps even better than high on the shoulder. I loved this look so much that I decided to take even more photos with my 1-day old HTC Vivid and play around with some of the nifty effects that would take several steps to do in Photoshop! These two were my favorite.

Anyway, now that we have smartphones that can take high-quality photos and videos that can be uploaded to our server with just a couple of key strokes, we hope to post more photos and videos of our products going forward. Hmm, maybe I can use this as an excuse to go shop for some new clothes!

Can Your Keychain Save You from Zombies??

So Daniele and I had been wanting to put together a video explaining the features of our Snaplink leather keychain for quite some time. We never dreamed it would turn out like this…

What started out as a regular product review video morphed into a less-than-serious skit, complete with a mad scientist/entrepreneur, a Silicon Valley startup guy, and … wait, is that a zombie chasing after Daniele? This one, you have to see. If nothing else, this video should remind us not to take ourselves too seriously!

Review of the STAZIONE Leather Messenger Bag Briefcase by Giudi

Daniele reviews the new STAZIONE Messenger Bag Briefcase by Giudi.

Transcript:

Hi. Today I want to introduce the STAZIONE: a new briefcase messenger bag by Giudi.

As you can see, it’s got the classic, sporty school-satchel design, but the smooth, high-sheen Italian leather and brass-colored hardware add a touch of elegance.

The front flap has two buckles – but they’re actually just for show. Hidden behind them are clip-in-closures … so you get the old-world coolness without the hassle.
The two open pockets behind the flap are really useful for small items that you might need to access in a hurry.

Inside, you’ve got one main compartment with a zipper closure, a back zippered pocket, a hook for your keys, a front velcro-pocket, and a couple of built-in pen loops and card holders.

There is also a larger zippered pocket in the back as well.
The shoulder strap is all leather, and you can adjust the length with this belt buckle.

All in all, I think it’s a great bag for business professionals, but I think it looks good with jeans, too … what do you think??

Added to My Christmas Wishlist: the New Sheepskin Shoulder Bag by Campomaggi

Sheepskin Shoulder Bag by Campomaggi
The New Sheepskin Shoulder Bag by Campomaggi

I had been eying this new bag by Campomaggi for quite some time. It spoke to me from the moment I saw it, and ever since then I would often picture us together – yes, as if I were in third grade imagining myself holding hands with that cute boy in class. Well, now that I have had the Abella bag on my desk for a few days (stroking, admiring, holding and smelling it at frequent intervals), I think I can get past the initial love-at-first-sight attraction and evaluate it on a deeper level.

In a way, this bag embodies the genius that is Marco Campomaggi: dynamic, evolving, progressive – and yet somehow timeless and unfaltering. It’s unlike any bag I have seen before, but somehow it feels very familiar and comforting. When Campomaggi first announced this new collection, I had my doubts about the use of montone (sheepskin) alongside the characteristic vacchetta leather that his fans have already come to love and expect. But the way the two materials come together, it’s a wonder why there are not more bags like this around … and again I am reminded of Marco’s exceptional vision and creativity as a designer.

This bag, by the way, does not have a very large opening, and one problem I have with these types of bags is that it becomes difficult to locate whatever it is that I need in a hurry. Whether it’s my cell phone ringing or my three-year-old shrieking for her pink hair tie, I need to be able to find what I’m looking for without emptying the entire contents of my bag on the floor. Marco seems to understand those concerns, as he designed not one, not two, but three separate compartments into this bag. This makes a huge difference – I know because I have tried it – knowing that the cell phone is in the first compartment while the wallet is in the second, for example, allowed me to quickly fish out the item in question without so much as looking into the bag. Also, the triple-gusset design adds sophistication and class, from a purely aesthetic point of view.

My favorite season is summer, but this year I find myself looking forward to the colder weather … just so I can (hopefully) start living happily ever after with my new Abella bag. Which, if my husband is reading, has been officially added to my Christmas wishlist.

New Murano Glass Treasures

Last week I spent a lot of time putting together the information about seven new Murano glass pieces by maestro Imperio Rossi. Needless to say, all pieces are authentic Imperio Rossi creations that bear his signature and the Vetro Artistico Murano tamper-proof sticker that features the number that identifies his furnace: 033.

The pieces added vary from vases to tumblers and feature a few different styles. I am always in awe when I work next to one of these murano glass creations: I end up admiring all the details.

The SBRUFFO product line features a layer of colored glass brushed (for lack of better words) on top of the item. The technique creates a multidimensional and multicolor effect that is very pleasing to the touch and eye.

The Murrine Millefiori product line features products that maestro Imperio Rossi designs in the evening and lays out before starting work for the day.

The Fusione product line features a mix of hand blown murrina cores with sculpted colored glass to create various objects. We carry three animal figurines that are absolutely adorable. Two of these, the elephant and the fish, just got added last week.

New Tote Bag and New Keychain Set

Last week we added a new Campomaggi distressed suede leather tote and a keychain gift set. We also inspected an incoming Dionigi shipment and found one Lucio with what appears to be a pen mark inside so we are offering it at a discount.

The Cardano distressed suede tote is a beautiful addition to the Campomaggi lineup. We plan on talking about it in a separate post.

The keychain set has a lot of varieties, including elephant, ladybug, and scottish terrier. Each set comes with a keychain and a cell phone charm.

Finally, the discounted Lucio Men’s Clutch is a great find if you are looking for a clutch and you know that you will probably soon personalize your clutch in a similar fashion. Thank our QC department for this opportunity.

How Your Feedback Helps: Two Examples

Too often, a company will post an insincere comment about how they value their customers’ feedback, etc., but in reality, when you offer your opinion or suggestion, you get an apathetic “Uh-huh, OK.” in return.

At Marcopoloni, we want to let our customers know that we really DO listen, and DO take your feedback seriously! Here are just two examples from this week of how your feedback helps:

Case  #1 – the Aching Shoulder

A few days ago, a gentleman who had purchased our Storia Leather Messenger Bag called to tell us how he absolutely loves his new bag.

“Do you sell a matching leather shoulder pad to go on the strap?” he asked. He carries a lot of things in his bag, and with a 1.5-hr commute, his shoulder can understandably get pretty sore. I had to tell the gentleman that unfortunately, Dionigi (the folks in Italy who make the bag) currently does not make any leather shoulder pads, but I thought it would be a great idea, and that we will see what we can do about it.

So I told Daniele about this exchange, and he has initiated a dialogue with Dionigi to discuss a potential new product design. Now, it’s not like we would have a new shoulder pad to offer anytime soon – these things take quite a while to plan, design, model, test, and produce – but it is an exciting project nonetheless. I hope to some day be able to call our Storia owner with some good news.

Case #2 – an Elderly-Friendly Coin Purse

This morning I took a call from a nice woman needing to return Gianni’s Tacco leather coin purse that she had purchased for her father. “The coin purse is beautiful, but it’s just not going to work for my dad,” she said, sadly. Her fear was that without a solid wall to stop the coins from spilling, her father, at 91 years old, may tilt the coin purse too far and the coins would all fall out.

This made sense to me … the coin purse she had purchased does have a soft lip that helps prevent the coins from falling out, but I can see how she would be worried for her elderly father. In fact, we had evaluated a few of the high-walled coin purses in the past, but decided against them because our Tacco coin purse was so popular, and we saw no need to offer an alternative. I immediately discussed this case with the team, and we all agreed that thanks to this kind woman who took the time to explain all of this to us, we now see a clear reason to carry the high-walled coin purse. I hope she will check back with us soon!
