According to Daniele (me), Marcopoloni turns 10 on October 6, 2013. Emi is not so sure about that date. What I remember is having a particularly bad Monday at work and coming home determined to move forward with the Marcopoloni project. I distinctly remember the date, but memory often fails me.
Whatever the date, we started without any products, suppliers, or customers. We started from absolutely nothing with just the goal to bring our clientele-to-be closer to outstanding artisans: artisans that we knew existed in our home countries (Italy and Japan) but were yet to get to know or contact.
We took the plunge, we explored, and we found some artisans who took the time to talk to us. We tried what we liked and offered those products on our web site. Some products really found favor with our clientele, which is what enabled us to continue to explore, for 10 years.
We are extremely grateful that you enabled us to keep on doing what we love. As a way to celebrate the success and to say THANK YOU VERY MUCH we have decided to offer discounts and promotions that are truly hard for me, the CFO, to accept. We are offering a deep discount on our BEST selling products of all time and we are giving away in simple contests almost $700 worth of merchandise. In addition, all orders over $50 will receive a Marcopoloni reusable shopping tote, as we hope to help you eliminate the need for single use plastic bags.
The celebration will continue all month long. As the month progresses the discounted items will become more popular and the value of the prizes will increase. Fittingly, we are expecting a baby boy towards the end of the month so we kept in mind our joy when picking our promotional items: we truly hope to bring a little happiness in your world too.
Going forward we hope that you will continue to support us and we know that our success will depend on how well we listen to you. We are trying to make it easier and easier to contact us. Please let us know how we can better serve you.
Two weeks ago, we celebrated my one year anniversary of working at Marcopoloni! Time sure flies by when you’re having a good time. As you all know, Marcopoloni is a very small company with only a grand total of three employees! Yes, that means it’s just Daniele, Emi and me handling every possible scenario in an online retail business. It can get really busy but it can also be relaxing. Working at Marcopoloni is also an introvert’s dream! I work in my own office in the comfort and silence of my leather-made companions, I am left alone 95% of the time to complete my tasks for the day and handling customer service isn’t bad at all since our customers are extremely nice and understanding. I love that I am encouraged to let my creativity run wild with side projects such as thinking of new ways to show off all the beautiful artisanal products we have! With the added bonus of house made cappuccino at our daily meetings, I don’t think it can get any better. I have learned a lot over the past year and I can only imagine how great the next year will be! Cheers to Daniele and Emi for making my first year at Marcopoloni awesome!
Have you ever wondered what it is like to work at Marcopoloni? I know that some customers have commented that they would like to be here to be around all the fabulous products that we carry. We do spend our days surrounded by wonderful Campomaggi bags, fragile Murano glass and Koito pottery, intriguing Antartidee wall clocks, etc. When I am not staring at all that, I try to catch up on accounting, make web site improvements (most of the time they are fixes), and market our products. My favorite part about marketing is helping customers with specific questions, and, in particular, modeling products for them.
The photo above is an example. Daniele and Emi are in front of our office. Our office is to the right of Emi and the big 274 sign. You can see the mannequin through the window, probably featuring a Caterina Lucchi bag, and that is how you can recognize our office if you come and pay us a visit. If I remember correctly, Emi was modeling a Campomaggi bag for a customer who needed to figure out whether the bag would be too big for her.
We know that shopping online is full of uncertainties, so please do not hesitate to ask us for help. Do YOU have any questions for us? We would love to help.
As 2012 draws to a close, we would like to say thank you to our customers and to our artisans. Both our customers and our artisans grew in numbers, and that certainly helped us grow as a business, but both customers and artisans went out of their way, in so many ways, to help us, and that made being in business even more worthwhile.
So, thank you very much, we appreciated it all, and we wish you a happy 2013!
I am proud to announce that Anita Ly has decided to join our team to help with order fulfillment, customer service… and to wear every hat imaginable.
Anita is such a fast learner and fast typist (she holds the company record in both categories) that she is probably still unaware that we are going to just let her do everything around here. I really look forward to a long vacation.
If you e-mail us or call us, you will likely get an answer from Anita. She is doing a great job already so please give her a really hard time because so far all requests have been handled without a glitch and I am starting to look really bad in comparison. I should not be too surprised, in case I do take that vacation, if when I come back I’m asked to enjoy an early retirement.
Anita is also a great fit for our company: she understands our mission and is behind it 100%. What’s even more important is that she’s also a chef and I got a taste of it. If she keeps that up she will find all sorts of encouragement at Marcopoloni and will have a long and successful career here.
I almost forgot to mention that Anita is fluent in Cantonese. That means that, if you are feeling the urge to console her for having a coworker who writes such a silly blog post, you can do so in Cantonese and I will not have a clue as to what just happened.
Finally Anita is an excellent writer, which means that I might lose my readers to her. We’ll see how it plays out. In the meantime, please join me in welcoming Anita with a thunderous round of applause and a cup of Cappuccino. Read Anita’s profile here.
