This is a video of an interview taken at Gianni's booth on September 9, 2010. Daniele and Gianni discuss the introduction of the new
line of leather rose accessories. See the transcript below.
I'm proud to introduce you to Gianni Raineri with La Cuoieria in Castanea [Messina Province, Sicily]
DANIELE:
Ciao, Gianni, how is it going?
GIANNI:
Ciao, Daniele.
DANIELE:
Tell me, Gianni, what's new at la Cuoieria?
GIANNI:
Well, this year we introduced the rose line. It's a line of products made using a technique from the 1700s.
GIANNI:
We mold the leather using alcohol.
GIANNI:
At first the leather is flat, then we immerse it in alcohol so we can work it to give it the shape we want. The result is
that every single piece is unique.
DANIELE:
So is all this shaped exclusively by hand?
GIANNI:
Yes, it's all shaped by hand.
GIANNI:
Every piece will be similar to the next but not identical.
GIANNI:
This is a technique that was used in Venice in the 1700s to make the masks used in theaters.
DANIELE:
Were they made of leather?
GIANNI:
Yes, they were made with leather. There were some wooden bases...
GIANNI:
...and on these wooden bases they would shape the masks.
